“In our day and age, we may believe that AIDS can be treated, that it is “less serious” than it used to be, and that homosexuality is taken for granted. But that would be wrong. We know that people all over the world still die because of their sexual orientation, and that in our country, parents or colleagues still reject homosexuals when they step out into the open. We know that coming out is like opening a chasm at one’s feet.” Philippe Saire, a major figure of contemporary dance in Switzerland, has chosen to adapt Tony Kushner’s play for his first theatrical foray. In the United States in the 80s, at the height of the Reagan era, the lives of several characters criss-cross, going from strength to weakness. A community, then a whole society, struggles in the midst of an upheaval against “superior forces”; religious and political convictions are strengthened by the arrival of a plague…
